3 Snowboarders at Sugarbowl

Submitted by Dirk Schoonmaker

Sometime in the afternoon of a rainy, miserable day, 3 snowboarders left the eastern boundary at Sugarbowl and headed into Emigrant Canyon. It is unknown how Sugarbowl patrol was notified, but they sent 2 patrollers to follow a set of tracks and notified TNSAR at 5:30.

8 skiers responded to Judah Lodge and 4 snowmobilers and the snowcat with 2 operators responded to Coldstream Canyon. At about 6:30, as the machines were being unloaded and the skiers were arriving at staging, patrol announced that their skiers had reached the 3 snowboarders and were able to give GPS coordinates. The patrollers with the MPs asked that they be picked up by snowcat.

The machines started up canyon, finding conditions mostly good, with some difficult stream crossings, and about 8:00 the snowmobilers rendezvouzed with the 3 snowboarders and 2 patrollers. They shuttled them back to the snowcat, which wasn’t far behind and all returned to the trailhead by about 9:00.

The skiers had stayed warm, dry, fed and mostly happy in the First Aid room, confident that the machinist would handle the mission.
