Disabled Pacific Crest Snowcat full of skiers

Submitted by Dirk Schoonmaker

The machine that hauls Pacific Crest Snowcat Tours skiers in and out of Coldstream Canyon lost a track near The South Fork of Cold Creek on the afternoon of Feb 25. On board were 11 skiers, one snowboarder, 2 guides and the driver. A 3 foot storm was just ending. TNSAR was dispatched at 7:30 and the snowcat and 2 snowmobiles responded.

The snowcat was able to follow the old tracks of the tour snowcat, and, about the time they were at the spot to descend into Coldstream Canyon, the tour snowcat texted that they were able to get their track back on and were limping out. The team snowcat continued down with the snowmobiles, unaware that the crippled snowcat was taking a different route back to the trailhead. The snowmobiles caught up with the crippled snowcat when it ran out of fuel within about a half mile of the trailhead, near the landfill. Snowmobilers towed a guide out on skis to get 5 gallons of fuel, which was brought back in by the Nevada County snowcat, which had been called as backup. The team snowcat caught up with the crippled snowcat at that time and all 3 snowcats made their way to the trailhead, getting out about midnight.
