Missing Mountain Bikers off Martis Peak

Submitted by Chris McConnell

The team was dispatched at about 1745 hours on Saturday night July 16th, 2011 with a report of 5 lost Mountain Bikers.

A group of 5 Mountain Bikers from Los Angeles has spent the day riding the trails at Northstar Resort and were told by a “local” that they had to go ride “Dirty Harry’s” trail off Martis peak. After a day was over at Northstar the group headed to Martis Peak.

They parked at the second gate off Martis Peak Drive, just below the fire lookout. They scoped out the trail and headed down the descent to Northstar Drive, via “Dirty Harry’s”. Sometime after their descent the light diminished and they lost the trail. Soon after the group was getting cold and tired and decided to call 911 for help.

TNSAR received the call at about 1745 hours and promptly paged out the team. 4x4’s, ATV’s, M/C’s and Mountain Bikes were called upon. A quick hasty team gathered and began the search at about 2030 hours. The initial report indicated about the group was about 10 miles below the peak. The missing persons did provide a cell phone but did not answer when called.

Approximately 30 minutes after beginning the search verbal contact was made with the wayward Mountain Bikers. Moments later met up with TNSAR. Water was provided to the group and there were no injuries or medical issues. The missing riders agreed they could ride out but were just cold and tired. The cold was promptly fixed by beginning the pedal out; the tired part was another story.

About 1.5 miles into the ride out the team met up with two TNSAR members who aided in getting the riders out. The Los Angelinos arrived at 267 at approximately 2200 hours, safe and sound. Sergeant Walsh and Deputy Davis provided a PSCO “shuttle” to Martis Peak to retrieve the rider’s truck.
