Training

The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team holds several training sessions every month throughout the autumn, winter, and spring. Training exercises vary from the ubiquitous terrain familiarization to first aid, avalanche safety or backcountry navigation. The Team trainings are designed to be fun and informative and all Team members are encouraged to attend.

If you provide a training, or otherwise require a reimbursement from TNSAR (for lunch subsidy, equipment purchase, etc), please use this form for reimbursement.

The following were the TNSAR trainings for the 2016 - 2017 season.

OCTOBER 5 (Wed) -- NEW MEMBER/GARAGE ORIENTATION

OCTOBER 15 (Sat) -- CALIFORNIA AVALANCHE WORKSHOP

A pre-season gathering of snow travelers to share knowledge, learn, laugh, and network. This seminar is modeled after the International Snow Science Workshop and other regional one-day snow and avalanche workshops throughout the west. It will feature a variety of speakers in the morning, then break for lunch (on your own) and return for additional speakers in the afternoon.Register at www.ltccconnect.com under Life Enhancement.

OCTOBER 19 (Wed) -- 5-DAY WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER

5-Day WFR put on by Crested Butte Outdoors October 19-23. This is external to the team, so out of pocket ($775 + 4% cc fee) unless you petition the board for reimbursement. Contact Neil for more info.

OCTOBER 29 (Sat) -- OHV TRAINING

Bring your OHV for a fun dust free ride up Cabin Creek Trail. Terrain familiarization, route finding and navigation skills.

OCTOBER 30 (Sun) -- BAY TO BAY TERRAIN FAMILIARZATION

Join Sara for a beautiful fall hike along the West Shore of Lake Tahoe between Meeks Bay and Emerald Bay. Route finding and navigation skills a plus.

NOVEMBER 12 (Sat) -- MAP AND COMPASS

Join Randall for a morning session of map and compass work. He will be covering all the basics of navigation with hands on techniques and practice. If you have a compass and maps of the North Tahoe/Kings Beach area, please bring.

Come learn the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of a typical search in a classroom setting. Get a glimpse behind the curtain and a better understanding of how everything unfolds.

DECEMBER 17 (Sat) -- MOCK SEARCH

Doug Read will be leading a mock search training at the Bradley Hut on Saturday 12/17-be at hut by 9am. A group will be heading out Friday afternoon at 2pm and will be sleeping in the hut. Come out for a fun filled overnight.

THIS TRAINING IS POSTPONED! Come on down for a comprehensive evening covering the use and protocols associated with a critical piece of search gear. Also a chance to deploy your airbag, repack it and refill the canister.

Paul will be leading a training focusing on several avalanche scenarios and the use of your transceivers in real world burial situations. Always good to brush up on skills that don't get practiced enough.

JANUARY 21 (Sat) -- DEEP CREEK / POLE CREEK TOUR - !! POSTPONED !!

!! POSTPONED !! Join Matt for a full day tour in the Deep and Pole Creek canyons. The focus will be on terrain familiarization, navigation, and of course amazing powder turns. We'll also be joined by a handful of skiers from other SAR teams. Call ahead as plans may change at the last minute depending on weather and avalanche forecasts.

JANUARY 28 (Sat) -- SIERRA CREST SKI TOUR

An all day adventure working on safe travel, navigation and beacon skills in the area along the Sierra Crest somewhere between Squaw and Barker Pass. We will be taking KT-22 up at 8:30, and entering 5 Lakes drainage from the KT saddle. Be sure to RSVP and bring a lunch and sunscreen, as it will be a long day in the sun!

FEBRUARY 4 (Sat) -- AVALANCHE SCENARIO TRAINING

Mike will be leading a training focusing on the use of your transceivers, probes and shovels in multiple situations. We will have a single burial, a multiple burial and a strategic probing/shoveling station. From the Negro Canyon Trailhead - skin in just a few hundred yards until you come to the right turn by the "Riding in Avalanche Terrain" sign. Take the right turn, and we will be just up ahead on the uphill side. Call ahead so we know how many are coming. Thanks
